Aburi is the kind of place that makes you exhale the moment you arrive. Perched at roughly 500 metres above sea level in the Akuapem Hills of the Eastern Region, this handsome town enjoys a cool, misty climate that is a genuine revelation after the heat and humidity of Accra below. The famous Aburi Botanical Gardens — one of Ghana's most treasured green spaces, established by the British colonial administration in 1890 — set the tone for a town that has always valued nature, tranquillity, and a certain old-world grace. In recent years a growing number of buyers have made the permanent move to Aburi, attracted by the cool air, generous space, significantly lower property values compared to Accra, and the increasingly viable commute down the Accra-Aburi road.

Life in Aburi revolves around nature, community, and a refreshingly unhurried pace. The Aburi Botanical Gardens are an extraordinary amenity — a vast, beautifully maintained park of tropical trees, palms, and flowering plants. Several excellent guesthouses and restaurants are clustered around the town centre, with the Hillburi Hotel and Conference Centre being a popular choice for special-occasion dinners. Fresh fruit and vegetable markets operate daily, selling produce grown on hillside farms. Hiking trails through the Akuapem Hills are a growing attraction, and artisan craft markets and pottery stalls give the town a creative, bohemian edge.
Aburi is a market town rather than a commercial hub. The town centre provides banks (including GCB), fuel stations, pharmacies, hardware stores, and a range of shops. For major supermarket shopping, residents make the trip to Accra or to Koforidua. Healthcare is provided by the Government Hospital in Aburi and several private clinics. Residents with serious healthcare needs access Accra's private hospitals, which are 45-60 minutes away via the Accra-Aburi road.
Aburi is home to historically significant schools. Aburi Girls Senior High School is a prestigious institution with a long tradition of academic excellence. Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (Presec) at Legon is in the same Akuapem district. The town hosts several primary and junior high schools. Families requiring international schooling typically commute to Accra or board children at city schools during the week.
Aburi sits approximately 35 kilometres from central Accra along the Aburi-Accra road, which climbs dramatically through plantation forests. Journey times to Accra range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Trotros from Aburi to Accra Central (Circle) run regularly. The Accra-Kumasi main road passes through Aburi's outskirts. Private vehicles are strongly advisable given limited public transport after dark.
