Accra

Greater Accra, Ghana

Accra is Ghana's capital, its commercial engine, and its most dynamic, diverse, and exciting city. Spread across the Greater Accra Region along the Gulf of Guinea coastline, the city is home to an estimated four million people and growing rapidly, fuelled by internal migration, a thriving middle class, and an increasingly influential diaspora community. Accra is simultaneously a sprawling African metropolis and an increasingly sophisticated, cosmopolitan city of fine restaurants, international schools, world-class hospitals, luxury residential developments, and a creative and entrepreneurial energy that feels genuinely electric. For property buyers and investors, the question is not whether to be in Accra, but where within this vast and opportunity-rich city.

Lifestyle

Living in Accra

Accra's lifestyle offer spans the full spectrum. East Legon, Cantonments, and Airport Residential offer a cosmopolitan, restaurant-rich, internationally minded lifestyle. Osu's Oxford Street is the closest thing to a European-style high street, lined with restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Labadi Beach and the string of coastal resorts along the eastern shore provide weekend getaways. The city hosts the National Museum of Ghana, the W.E.B Du Bois Centre, and various art galleries and cultural institutions. The food scene ranges from extraordinary street food at night markets to fine dining at award-winning restaurants. Golf, tennis, swimming, and fitness are all well catered for across the city's private and semi-private facilities.

Amenities

As a national capital, Accra's amenity base is the most comprehensive in Ghana. All major supermarket chains, international retail brands, banks, and service businesses are represented. Healthcare is led by Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, joined by a network of excellent private hospitals including Nyaho Medical Centre, Trust Hospital, Lister Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, and the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). These facilities provide Accra with one of the most comprehensive healthcare environments in West Africa. Specialist services — cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, reproductive medicine — are increasingly available within the city.

Schools

Education in Accra is as varied as the city itself. At the international level, Lincoln Community School, Ghana International School, Roman Ridge School, and SOS-Hermann Gmeiner International College provide outstanding education for the globally mobile community. At tertiary level, the University of Ghana at Legon, GIMPA, the Central University College, Ashesi University, and numerous private universities and professional institutes give Accra one of the deepest higher education ecosystems on the continent.

Transport

Accra is connected to the world via Kotoka International Airport (KIA), which serves direct flights to London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, New York, Dubai, Johannesburg, and numerous African destinations. Domestically, Accra's road network anchored by the N1 motorway, Ring Road, Liberation Road, and Independence Avenue connects all parts of the city and provides national highway links to Kumasi, Cape Coast, Tema, and Takoradi. Within the city, Uber, Bolt, trotros, and shared taxis provide transport across all neighbourhoods. Traffic congestion is Accra's most significant quality-of-life challenge, and neighbourhood selection for commuting efficiency is one of the most important decisions a buyer can make.
