Cape Coast

Central, Ghana

Cape Coast is a city that carries the weight of history with remarkable grace. As the former capital of the Gold Coast and home to the Cape Coast Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — it is one of the most historically significant places in all of Africa. Yet Cape Coast today is a living, breathing city: it is home to Ghana's most beautiful campus university, it sits on one of the country's most scenic stretches of Atlantic coastline, and its streets bustle with the energy of a growing regional capital. The combination of history, education, coastal living, and affordability makes Cape Coast one of Ghana's most compelling residential propositions for buyers who seek a different quality of life.

Lifestyle

Living in Cape Coast

Cape Coast's lifestyle is shaped by its history, student population, and extraordinary natural setting. The Cape Coast Castle and surrounding heritage walk, the Kakum National Park with its famous canopy walkway (just 30 kilometres north), and the weekend rhythms of a coastal town give the city depth of character that larger cities lack. The Victoria Park, Cultural Centre, and various heritage venues host events year-round. Fresh seafood is a culinary staple, and local chop bars and restaurants serving grilled fish, palm nut soup, and kontomire stew are among the best in Ghana.

Amenities

Cape Coast's amenity offering is that of a well-functioning regional capital. The Cape Coast Metropolitan Market and commercial streets provide everything from fresh produce to hardware. Multiple banks including GCB, Fidelity, and Ecobank operate branches, with good ATM coverage. Healthcare is centred on the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, one of Ghana's four teaching hospitals, providing an exceptionally high standard of public medical care with specialist services in medicine, surgery, obstetrics, and paediatrics. Several private clinics complement the teaching hospital's capacity.

Schools

Cape Coast's educational credentials are outstanding. The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is one of Ghana's leading universities, with a strong reputation in education, science, and the humanities, and a campus among the most beautiful in West Africa. Mfantsipim School — one of Ghana's most famous boys' schools and alma mater of Kofi Annan — is located here, alongside Wesley Girls' High School, another institution of national renown.

Transport

Cape Coast is approximately 145 kilometres west of Accra along the coastal N1 highway. Journey times by road range from 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Shared taxis and buses from Accra's Neoplan/STC terminal run regular services to Cape Coast. Within the city, trotros and shared taxis serve all major areas. Air travel requires the journey to or from Accra or Takoradi.
