Osu

Greater Accra, Ghana

Osu is the beating heart of cosmopolitan Accra. Oxford Street, Osu's famous commercial spine, is as close as Accra gets to a proper high street, lined with restaurants, phone shops, pharmacies, fashion boutiques, and enough street food vendors to keep even the most demanding foodie happy. Yet Osu is not merely about noise and neon: duck one street back from Oxford and you find quiet residential lanes of older bungalows, modest apartment blocks, and houses with deep, fruit-tree-shaded gardens. It is this contrast — the energy of the street and the possibility of peace just steps away — that makes Osu so endlessly appealing to such a wide cross-section of Accra residents.
