Ridge

Greater Accra, Ghana

Ridge is one of Accra’s oldest and most architecturally significant residential neighbourhoods. Developed during the British colonial period as a residential zone for government officials and senior civil servants, Ridge retains a remarkable stock of early-to-mid 20th century bungalows and colonial-era structures that give it a distinctive historical character found nowhere else in Accra. Many of these properties sit on large plots with mature trees, and the overall streetscape — particularly around the Switchback Road and the upper Ridge area — has a serene, almost park-like quality. Today, Ridge is home to a mix of long-established Ghanaian families, senior government officials, NGO and UN personnel, and the occasional private investor who recognises the neighbourhood’s extraordinary potential and irreplaceable architectural heritage.

Lifestyle

Living in Ridge

Ridge’s lifestyle appeal is rooted in its peacefulness, its green character, and its proximity to central Accra’s amenities without being embedded within the congestion. The neighbourhood sits close to the Cantonments area and its dining scene, and the vibrant restaurant and bar strip of Osu is a short drive away. The Ghana National Theatre and the W.E.B Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture are nearby, offering world-class cultural programming for residents with an interest in the arts. The Accra City Hotel is close for business meetings and social events. Several embassies and international organisations maintain premises in Ridge, contributing to a cosmopolitan resident community with an active social life.

Amenities

Ridge Hospital (the Accra Regional Hospital) is located directly within the neighbourhood, making it a particularly reassuring address for families with healthcare priorities. This major regional facility provides a wide spectrum of public medical services including emergency care, maternal health, paediatrics, and surgery. The 37 Military Hospital, another of Accra’s significant medical institutions, is immediately adjacent to Ridge, creating an exceptional healthcare proximity for residents. The broader central Accra commercial zone provides all banking, retail, and everyday service needs within minutes. The Independence Avenue and Liberation Road corridors ensure rapid access to supermarkets, pharmacies, and all urban conveniences.

Schools

Ridge’s central location puts it within easy reach of Accra’s best schools. The Ghana International School is approximately 15 minutes away, as is Accra Academy. Cantonments and Labone host several good private preparatory schools. Families requiring international schooling can access Lincoln Community School and Roman Ridge School within 20–25 minutes. The University of Ghana at Legon is 20 minutes by car. For working parents, Ridge’s proximity to the CBD and major offices means the daily school-run and commute can be combined efficiently.

Transport

Ridge is supremely well connected to the rest of Accra. Independence Avenue, Liberation Road, the Ring Road, and Switchback Road all converge near the neighbourhood, giving residents multiple routing options to the CBD (under 10 minutes), the Airport (15–20 minutes), and the eastern suburbs (25–35 minutes). Trotros along Independence Avenue and the Ring Road provide affordable public transport, and Uber and Bolt response times are typically very short given the central location. The area’s walkability — to the CBD, to government offices, and to some amenities — is among the best in the city.
