Spintex

Greater Accra, Ghana

Spintex Road is one of Accra’s great transformation stories. Twenty years ago, this eastern corridor was characterised by light industry, logistics yards, and scattered housing. Today it is one of the city’s most energetic residential and commercial zones, lined with supermarkets, restaurants, new apartment developments, gated estates, and an ever-growing roster of commercial facilities that cater to Accra’s expanding middle class. The name ‘Spintex’ refers to the road itself — the Spintex Road stretching from the Tetteh Quarshie area towards Tema — and it has become shorthand for a whole lifestyle zone that offers modern housing at more accessible price points than the premium western suburbs, with improving amenities and a growing community spirit. For first-time buyers, young families, and investors seeking value, Spintex is one of Accra’s most exciting propositions.

Lifestyle

Living in Spintex

Life on Spintex has genuinely improved as the corridor has matured. The Junction Mall is the social anchor of the neighbourhood, offering a cinema, supermarket, restaurants, and weekend entertainment that draw residents from across the eastern suburbs. Several independent restaurants and casual dining venues have opened along the Spintex road corridor, with everything from grilled tilapia to pizza and sushi now available within the neighbourhood. The beach is relatively accessible via the coastal road, and Labadi Beach is under 20 minutes away for weekend relaxation. Multiple gyms and fitness centres serve the health-conscious population, and the newer residential estates often include communal pools and recreational areas. The growing number of young professionals in the area creates an increasingly vibrant social scene.

Amenities

Spintex’s amenity infrastructure has grown dramatically and continues to expand. The Junction Mall is the primary retail hub, and several standalone supermarkets, pharmacies, hardware stores, and service providers line the main road. Multiple branches of major banks — Ecobank, GCB, Fidelity — operate in the area, and ATM coverage is good. Healthcare is improving: the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is the nearest major public facility, though it requires a 30–40 minute journey during normal traffic. Privately, several clinics and medical centres have opened along the Spintex corridor to serve the growing population, and the Trust Hospital in East Legon is accessible in 20–30 minutes. Dental and optical services are increasingly available within the area.

Schools

Spintex is home to a growing number of private nurseries, primary schools, and junior high schools serving the expanding residential population. For secondary and international education, families typically commute to East Legon or the broader Accra metropolitan area, where Lincoln Community School, Galaxy International, and the major SHS schools are accessible within 20–35 minutes. The University of Ghana at Legon and various private universities in central Accra are commutable from Spintex. As the population grows, demand for more local educational options is increasing and new schools continue to open along the corridor.

Transport

Spintex Road connects to the N1 motorway towards Tema and to the Tetteh Quarshie interchange towards central Accra, making it a well-connected corridor for both eastern and central city destinations. The journey to Accra CBD typically takes 30–45 minutes, and Tema is approximately 20–30 minutes away. Traffic on the Spintex Road itself can be heavy during morning and evening peaks, so residents are advised to plan commutes accordingly. Uber and Bolt are active throughout the corridor, and trotros run frequent services along Spintex Road towards Accra Central and Tema Station. The ongoing expansion of road infrastructure in this area is expected to progressively ease congestion over the coming years.
