Takoradi

Western, Ghana

Takoradi is a city with momentum. As Ghana's oil and gas capital and the administrative centre of the Western Region, Takoradi sits at the intersection of industrial energy and coastal charm in a way that few African cities can match. The discovery of oil in the Jubilee Field in 2007 transformed Takoradi's property market overnight, driving demand for quality housing from energy company expatriates, technical staff, and the growing coterie of service businesses that cluster around the oil economy. But Takoradi is far more than an oil town: it has a deep fishing and trading heritage, one of Ghana's most important deep-water ports, excellent beaches, a strong educational tradition, and a cost of living considerably lower than Accra. For investors, the combination of oil-driven rental demand and below-Accra valuations makes Takoradi a compelling proposition.

Lifestyle

Living in Takoradi

Takoradi's lifestyle has been significantly enriched by the oil economy. The Meridian Hotel and various newer hospitality establishments offer international-standard dining and entertainment, and the Takoradi Market Circle area hums with commercial energy and street-food culture. The city's beaches — including the popular Nkroful Beach and nearby Busua Beach, which is among the most beautiful stretches of coastline in West Africa — provide outstanding weekend leisure options. Busua is a genuine surfer's paradise and only 45 minutes from the city centre, making it a popular escape for Takoradi residents. The Takoradi City Mall provides modern retail and dining options, and the active expat community ensures a year-round calendar of sports clubs, social events, and international cultural activities.

Amenities

Takoradi's amenity infrastructure is solid and growing. The Takoradi City Mall anchors the modern retail sector, with supermarkets, banks, restaurants, and retail stores. All major Ghanaian banks have branches in the city, and ATM coverage is comprehensive. The Takoradi Government Hospital provides public healthcare, but the city's most significant medical facility for private patients is Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, which is the main referral hospital for the Western Region. Several private clinics and medical centres serve the oil company community and the broader professional population. Pharmacies, dental practices, and specialist services are well represented throughout the city's commercial zones.

Schools

Takoradi has a well-regarded educational landscape. The Takoradi Technical University (TTU) is one of Ghana's major technical institutions and serves the city's industrial and engineering economy with relevant degree and diploma programmes. The Takoradi International School and several well-run private schools serve the international and professional community, while Takoradi Secondary School and Fijai Senior High School are among the strongest public secondary institutions in the Western Region. Primary and nursery education is plentiful throughout the city. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has invested in educational infrastructure in the region, reflecting the oil industry's commitment to local human capital development.

Transport

Takoradi is connected to Accra via the N1 coastal highway (approximately 230 kilometres, 3.5-4.5 hours by road) and via domestic flights from Takoradi Airport to Kotoka International Airport (approximately 45-60 minutes flying time). Within the city, taxis and trotros are the primary public transport modes. Uber is active in Takoradi, though coverage is less comprehensive than in Accra. The Takoradi Port is a major economic hub that generates significant logistics traffic, and the city's road network, while improving, can be congested in the central commercial areas. Private vehicles are recommended for residents who value flexibility and comfort.
