Tema

Greater Accra, Ghana

Tema is Ghana's largest planned city and, to many outsiders' surprise, one of its most liveable. Built in the 1960s around the development of Africa's then-largest artificial harbour, Tema was conceived on a grid system of numbered communities. Today it is home to hundreds of thousands of residents, a vast industrial and port economy, and a quietly thriving residential scene that attracts working families, industrial managers, and young professionals priced out of Accra's premium suburbs. The sea is never far away, the streets are generally wider and less congested than central Accra, and the sense of community within each numbered quarter is real and tangible.

Lifestyle

Living in Tema

Tema's lifestyle offer has grown considerably in recent years. The Community 1 commercial area and the Harbour Area hub provide restaurants, bars, and social venues. The Meridian Hotel and several guesthouses host events and functions. A number of new restaurant concepts serving everything from local Ghanaian cuisine to Lebanese and Chinese food have opened along the main commercial corridors. Tema's beachfront communities offer a raw, authentic coastal experience with fresh fish sold directly from morning catches. Sports facilities include football pitches, a community sports complex, private gyms, and the Tema Sports Stadium for major events.

Amenities

Tema is a self-sufficient city and its amenity base reflects that. Larger supermarkets such as Palace Supermarket and various local retailers serve the population. The Tema Shopping Mall and community commercial centres provide retail, banking, and services. Healthcare is of a good standard: the Tema General Hospital is the primary public facility. The Meridian Hospital and several well-equipped private clinics serve those seeking private care. The industrial nature of the city means occupational health and emergency services are particularly well-developed. Pharmacies are available throughout all communities.

Schools

Tema has well-established educational infrastructure. The Tema International School (TIS) is a highly regarded institution serving the international community. Numerous public and private secondary schools including Chemu SHS, Tema Secondary, and St. Paul's Technical Institute provide broad educational pathways. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority also maintains training facilities serving the maritime and industrial sectors.

Transport

Tema is connected to Accra via the dual-carriageway N1 motorway, making the 25-40 kilometre journey to Accra CBD feasible in 30-50 minutes outside peak hours. The motorway also links Tema to the eastern corridor, Aflao, and the Volta region. Within Tema, trotros and taxis operate across all communities and the numbered grid makes navigation intuitive. Uber and Bolt are active throughout the city.
